Description
Also called Beophwagyeong for short, Myobeob yeonhwagyeong (Saddharmapundarika Sutra) is based on the basic ideology asserting that the path to become Buddha is open to everyone. This Buddhist scripture is a fundamental sutra of Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism, and it greatly influenced the establishment of Korean Buddhism along with Hwaeomgyeong (Avatamsaka Sutra). This book consists of Vols. 1-7 of Saddharmapundarika Sutra. It was published in the 1st year of King Sejo’s reign (1456) by Han, the crown princess, to pray for the soul of Hong, wife of first vice premier Han Hwak. It is a wood-block copy printed on mulberry paper. Volumes 1-7 are combined into 3 books, with each book measuring 30 cm long and 17.6 cm wide. These books have been relatively well-preserved even though the covers are partially damaged. The titles are written in gold on the red cover. On the first page of each book is an illustration summarizing the content of the Buddhist scriptures. Even though these books are not the first print, they are considered valuable since the entire volumes 1-7 have been handed down.
