Description

Jeongyodang Lecture Hall was built at Dosanseowon Confucian Academy to commemorate the scholarly achievements and virtues of Yi Hwang (pen-name: Toegye, 1501~1570). Seowon (Confucian academy) were private educational institutes of the Joseon Dynasty where worship ceremonies were held for admirable sages and the doctrines of Confucianism were taught. Seojae Hall (to the west) and Dongjae Hall (to the east), which were built to accommodate students, are located on the left and right-hand sides of the forecourt, respectively. Built in 1574 (the 7th year of the reign of King Seonjo of the Joseon Dynasty the lecture hall measures 4 kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) at the front and 2 kan at the sides, and has a hip-and-gable roof resembling the character 人 when viewed from the side. The hall consists of a floor-heated room and a vestibule with a wooden floor. It was repaired in 1969. The lecture hall also contains the tablet titled Dosanseowon, which was presented to the academy by King Seonjo. It is said that the letters on the tablet were written by Han Seok-bong, one of the greatest calligraphers of the time, right in front of the king.
