Description
This Buddhist painting depicts a scene of Buddha preaching to his disciples at Yeongchuksan Mountain. Measuring 340 cm long and 254 cm wide, it is painted on silk. In the painting, Buddha is placed at the center and is surrounded by many Bodhisattva and Buddhist saints as well as his followers. The painting looks bright and splendid because red and green colors are mainly used. The robes are painted in gold, so they look very brilliant. This painting has several distinctive features that differentiate it from other Buddhist paintings. First, unlike other Buddhist paintings in the Joseon Dynasty, which depicted singwang (light emanating from the body) and dugwang (light radiating from the head), this painting portrays only singwang. Second, there is no田-shaped pattern on the robes. Third, there is no flower ornament on Buddha's right ankle. Skillful brush strokes and magnificent colors make this Buddhist painting the best one in the early 18th century. Since it was made at the order of the royal family in the 33rd year of the reign of King Sukjong (1707) of the Joseon Dynasty, it has high historical value.
