Description

The Dharani Sutra in gold on indigo paper (translated into Korean) Part I/1-2 was printed with Eulyu metal movable type by Jujaso, the Printing Typecasting Office, in 1465 (the 11th year of the reign of King Sejo) based on King Sejo’s gugyeol (a method of writing Korean according to the phonetic and semantic values of Chinese characters to facilitate understanding of texts written in classical Chinese) and on a rough summarized edition made by Monk Guifengzongmi (780-841) of the Tang Dynasty of China. Books printed with Eulyu metal movable type were not used for long time after their invention due to concerns that the letters did not look neat or tidy. Few Eulyu metal types have survived to the present day as most were melted down to make a new metal type called Gapjinja in 1484 (the 15th year of thee reign of King Seongjong). The copy kept by the King Sejong the Great Memorial Society is one of the few extant wood-printed copies, and accordingly is regarded as a precious material for scholars of Korean linguistics, bibliography, and research on the history of printing with metal movable type.
