This book is also called “Beophwagyeong” for short. The central idea of this book is that the path to become Buddha is open to everyone. This book is the basic Buddhist scripture of Cheontaejong, a Buddhist Order. Along with Hwaeomgyeong (Flower Garland Sutra), it has greatly influenced the establishment of Buddhism in Korea. Printed on mulberry paper from woodblocks, this book measures 32.5 cm long and 23 cm wide. As the second book of Volume 7, which consists of two books, it was published by Gangyeongdogam (government institute established during the reign of King Sejo of Joseon to translate Buddhist scriptures into Korean). The main text and the annotation parts written by Gyehwan, who was a monk of the Song Dynasty of China, were translated in simple Korean. At the end of the book, Kim Su-on (1410-1481) recorded the reasons for publishing the book. The woodblocks were first engraved in Gangyeongdogam in the 9th year of the reign of King Sejo of the Joseon Dynasty (1463). Insudaebi, mother of King Seongjong, ordered the printing of the book to pray for the bliss of the dead, including King Sejo and Yejong, Crown Prince Uigyeong, and Prince Inseong, in the 3rd year of King Seongjong’s reign (1472). It is an important book telling a historical fact, i.e., Gangyeongdogam published this book among the 29 Buddhist scriptures printed by Insudaebi.
