Description

This white porcelain jar was made during the Joseon Period and measures 33.2㎝ in height, 16.8㎝ in mouth diameter and 15.2㎝ in bottom diameter. There is a horizontal linear joint at the mid-belly level, at the point where the jar is the widest in diameter. The mouth forms a small angle and is greater in diameter than the base; which suggests that this jar was made during the mid-Joseon Period. There is a band of large cloud designs on the shoulder, in the section immediately around the mouth rim. Below the band, the same cloud design, but in a slightly smaller size, is repeated in ten places. Cloud designs are also present toward the bottom of the body of the jar, in six places. Finally, bamboo designs are displayed in the central section of the body. The surface covered with a thin but even coat of glaze is clear with a light grayish milky hue. Iron oxide-decorated white porcelain wares were manufactured since early Joseon, but few of them have survived to the present. They were especially widely produced toward the mid-17th century, after the Japanese Invasion of 1592, when there was a shortage of cobalt pigment. This majestically-shaped jar with underglaze designs drawn in assured brushstrokes displays a bold and unconstrained elegance, and is considered a major example of mid-Joseon iron oxide-decorated white porcelain ware.
