Description

This book on medicine and pharmacology was compiled in the 7th year of King Taejo’s reign (1398) by referencing medical experiences and books of that time, based on Samhwaja hyangyakbang collected by Kim Hui-seon and Hyangyakgan yeokbang compiled by Gwon Jung-hwa. The following year, it was published in Gangwon-do by Kim Hui-seon, provincial governor of Gangwon-do during the Joseon Dynasty. This book includes the fourth and fifth volumes among the entire 30 volumes of Hyangyak jesaeng jipseongbang, and it is not a perfect one. In the case of Volume 4, pages 1-9 are missing out of 44 pages. For Volume 5, pages 41-44 are missing out of 44 pages. Volumes 4 and 5 slightly differ on a few pages in terms of the number of letters and style. From Yangchonjip by Gwon Geun as well as a writing titled A study on the Development of Oriental Medicine Bibliography by Kim Seong-su, the publication background and the scope of prescriptions covered by the book can be roughly inferred. In other words, the books contain the symptoms of 338 kinds of disease and 2,803 kinds of prescription formulas. They provide an overall description of medical experiences and suggest prescription formulas for each disease along with a supplementary explanation. In particular, Hyangyak jesaeng jipseongbang was used as a foundation for the Hyangyak jipseongbang published in the 15th year of the reign of King Sejong the Great (1433). It is considered very valuable since it developed and applied local medicine suitable for the Korean climate and constitution by using herbal plants growing in Korea. The printing condition of this book is relatively good compared to that of Volume 6 (Treasure No. 1178).
