Description
The Buddhist painting depicts Amitabha Buddha, a Buddhist god who lives in the Pure Land and leads the souls of the dead to the Pure Land. Most of the existing Buddhist paintings of the Goryeo Dynasty made Amitabha Buddha their main theme, usually depicting scenes of Amitabha Buddha preaching in the Pure Land and welcoming Buddhist disciples. This painting depicts a scene of Amitabha Buddha greeting a group of Buddhist disciples. Amitabha Buddha looks ahead and has his left hand on the chest and the right hand down, with the two feet spread slightly. A circle behind the head of Amitabha Buddha is painted with gold powder. Amitabha Buddha is wearing red and green Buddhist robes with circle patterns drawn with gold powder. These are the typical style of Buddhist paintings of the Goryeo Dynasty. Even though this Buddhist painting does not have any record, it seems to be a Buddhist painting of the Goryeo Dynasty because its overall shape is very similar to the Amitabha Buddha painting in Donghaeam Temple in Japan. Still, a unique feature is that the thumb and middle finger of Amitabha Buddha's right hand are attached to each other, and the left hand does not make any symbolic sign; thus distinguishing the painting from other existing Buddhist paintings of that time.
