Description
This Royal Edict, written personally by King Sejo of the Joseon Dynasty, was issued to Gwangdeoksa Temple and Gaecheonsa Temple in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do on the 10th day, 8th month of the 3rd year of King Sejo’s reign (1457). It was issued in a bid to ease the excessive labor burden of the temples. In terms of style and contents, it is the same as that given to Yongmunsa Temple in Yecheon and that given to Ssangbongsa Temple in Neungseong (Treasure Nos. 729 and 1009, respectively). In particular, it was issued on the same date as the one issued to Ssangbongsa Temple. This document provides insight into the form of royal edicts during the early Joseon Dynasty and the Buddhist policy during the reign of King Sejo.
