This stone lantern stands side by side with the Three-story Stone Pagoda in Cheongnyangsa Temple. The structure consists of an octagonal pedestal, the hourglass-shaped middle shaft, octagonal light chamber and capstone. This lantern is noted for its decorative carving that adorns almost all parts of the pedestal and the fire chamber. The lower part of the pedestal is decorated with a circular pattern with a lion in it, while the other parts are covered with lotus and other floral patterns. The octagonal fire chamber, which is supported by the hourglass-shaped shaft and a stone block in the shape of lotus flowers in full bloom, has four windows with figures of Four Guardian Kings carved between them. The roof stone is curved upward at the corners, giving a soaring effect to the heavy structure. For the finial, there remain only two stones that show no definite form. This octagonal stone lantern follows the stonework style of the Silla period. However, judging from its carving style and the shape of pillar, it is assumed to be made in the late 9th century.
