Description
This bell (height: 85㎝, bell mouth diameter: 58㎝, thickness: 6㎝) is kept in the Great Light Hall of Haeinsa Temple. Youngnyu (canons) are made in the shape of a dragon portrayed energetically. The shoulders are adorned with lotus flower patterns. Right below the shoulder are yugwak (square-shaped ornamental space with nine lotus flower-shaped nipples arranged symmetrically). Images of Buddhist saints are inscribed between yugwak. Three thick horizontal lines surround the bell at the center. There are flower patterns above the three lines, with dragons inscribed below such lines. These patterns leave an impression of beauty. Letters inscribed below yugwak say that the bell was made in 1491 (the 22nd year of King Seongjong’s reign). The bell is regarded as valuable for those studying changes in art history and Buddhist artifacts.
