Description
This type of large-sized painting used to be hung in the front courtyard of a temple hall at an open-air sermon session or ritual. This painting measures 10.50m (L) by 8.17m (W). The image of Shakyamuni Buddha at the center is flanked by Manjusri Bodhisattva and Samantadhadra Bodhisattva. Standing behind him are Prabhutaratna Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, Avalokitesvara, and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva. The images all display round faces and adequately proportionate bodies. Their cheeks, eyeball areas, lower jaws, hands, and feet are depicted in light pink. Red and green colors are used a lot, with light colors creating a pleasant atmosphere. Made in 1700 (the 26th year of King Sukjong’s reign), the piece displays minute details including nose hairs, flamboyant colors, and colorful patterns of the robe. It shows the typical features of the Buddhist paintings at the end of the 17th Century and early 18th Century. Names attached to the images make it a valuable one for those studying Buddhist paintings.
