Description

Dedicated to a great Buddhist monk named Gwangja, this stupa was built in the Goryeo Dynasty at the entrance of the Taeansa Temple. Gwangja was born in 864 (the 4th year of King Gyeongmun) and died at the age of 82 in 945 (the 2nd year of King Hyejong’s reign). This typical stupa is octagonal from the base to the top. Arabesque pattern with lotus petals is carved on the lower pedestal and a lower middle one is placed upon it. 16-petaled lotus flowers are carved on the upper pedestal with twofold. A censer and Four Guardian Kings carved in relief on every side of its main body. The roof stone, which is high but is thinner at the corners, doesn't look heavy. Decorations on the capstone are intact. Most parts of this stupa are well preserved and the sculpting techniques and its organization are elaborated and harmonious.
