Description
This monument was set up by naval officers in honor of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who accomplished extraordinary feats during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. The phrase “Taru (meaning “shedding tears”)” was obtained from a story of how the people of Xiangyang, China shed tears at a tombstone of Yang Hu, a virtuous local administrator. The monument is composed of a square platform inscribed with floral patterns, the body, and the capstone inscribed with cloud patterns. A lotus bud-shaped bead is placed at the top of the capstone. The front side of the monument contains the name “Tarubi” in large letters. Below the name are inscribed letters stating what made them set up the monument. The monument was set up in 1603 (the 36th year of King Seonjo’s reign), six years after the admiral was killed in action.
