Description
This is an iron seated Sakyamuni Buddha of a kind common during the Goryeo Dynasty. It was found at a temple site in Hasachang-ri, Dongbu-myeon, Gwangju-gun in Gyeonggi-do. The round face has upward slanting eyes, a tightly closed mouth, and a sharp nose. This expression, which stresses the ideal over the merciful, was popular during the Goryeo Dynasty. Samdo, i.e. the three wrinkles on the neck are clear, but the outline of the neck is not clear because the wrinkle lines come down to the chest. This is also a reflection of the characteristics of that period. The clothing covers only the left shoulder and the folds are simple. The dignified shoulders and broad chest are in the same Unified Silla style as the principal Buddha of Seokguram Grotto, while the sharp facial expression and simple style of the folds are typical characteristics of early Goryeo Dynasty statues. So, this statue is judged to have been made in early Goryeo, retaining many elements of the Unified Silla style.
