Description

Gabot (Korean armor) is a protective clothing to protect one's body from the arrows, spears or swords of an enemy on a battlefield. Jeong Ji was born in the 3rd year of the reign of King Chungmok of Goryeo (1347). He distinguished himself by defeating Japanese aggressors, and died in the 3rd year of King Gongyang’s reign (1391). This gyeongbeongap (a kind of Korean armor), worn by him and passed down by his descendants, was made of plaited iron panels and rings. It is 70 cm in total length, 79 cm in girth and 30 cm in sleeve length. It is made after punching iron panels, 7.5~8 cm high and 5~8.5 cm wide, and connecting them with iron rings. On the front are six lines of six panels each and two lines of these lines are capable of being adjusted. On the back are 5 lines of 7 panels each. On the chest part, the number of the iron panels is reduced to one line of four panels, and two lines of three panels each, and these are connected to go through under the arms. The shoulders are formed with rings without panels, allowing the arms to move freely. The armor has some slight flaws in the lower front part but it retains its original form comparatively well. It has significance as the only surviving armor of gyeongbeongap kind.
