Description

This is a dictionary compiled by Monk Fayun (1088-1158) of the Song Dynasty of China to interpret words in Buddhist scriptures translated into Chinese based on Sanskrit sound, classifying them according to their types. It contains 2,000-plus words in 64 sections. Each section interprets words by explaining their origin, meaning, and sources. Originally, the dictionary was compiled in seven volumes, but this particular one is bound in eight volumes. A statement made at the end of the dictionary shows that the compiler, Fayun, was a monk at Jingdesi Temple in Suzhou, China, and that his pen-name was Wujizi (also called Purun). The content tells us that the dictionary was based on Tripitaka. Records of 1301 (the 5th year of the reign of Emperor Dade of the Yuan Dynasty of China), included at the end of Volume 14, make one assume that the dictionary was compiled based on the qisha edition of the Yuan Dynasty.
