Description

When you enter Honghwamun Gate, you can see this stone bridge crossing over a stream. Since a stream flowing through a palace or a royal tomb is regarded as divine water carrying the spirit of nature, it is usually found where a holy or special site is located, in which case a bridge is also necessary. Though this is not a wide bridge, it seems stable, being supported by twin rainbow-shaped arches. An eye-catching goblin mask, triangular with a broad forehead and narrow jaws, is carved at the place where the two arches meet. Standing on either side of the bridge, it appears to be protecting those who cross it from evil spirits. The middle of the bridge, which is also shaped like a rainbow, was made rather wide to accommodate the honor guards who escorted the king when he took a walk in the palace grounds. There is a beautiful handrail along either side of the bridge, and a mythical stone beast sits on each end pillar. The bridge is extraordinary in style and the carvings on each part and more beautiful than those of bridges in other palaces. For this reason, it is the only bridge recognized as a treasure. The year of its construction is inferred to be the 14th year of the reign of King Seongjong (1483) of Joseon, the same as that of the palace.
