Description
These are six volumes of a sagyeong, a decorated copy of a sutra, housed in Gwangdeoksa Temple in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do. The books, all copies of Myobeopyeonhwagyeong, appear to have been written between the late Goryeo Dynasty and the early Joseon Dynasty. Myobeopyeonhwagyeong is called Beophwagyeong for short, and it is the basic sutra of Cheontae Order that influenced the establishment of Korea Buddhism. Parts 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the Lotus Sutra in Silver on Indigo Paper and part 4 of the Lotus Sutra in Silver on Oak Paper were designated as National Treasures. Parts 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the Lotus Sutra in Silver on Indigo Paper are foldable, and the size of each is 42 cm long by 14.5 cm wide. The cover of the book is painted in gold with splendid flowers. The start of each part has a drawing, summarizing the contents in gold. Part 4 of the Lotus Sutra in Silver on Oak Paper is also foldable and it is 33.3 cm long by 11.4 cm wide. Its cover was originally red but has now faded to dark brown, though the black discolored letters are in excellent penmanship. There is a prefatory drawing in gold, summarizing the contents. Another part 4 of the Lotus Sutra in Silver on Oak Paper is in the same shape, but in a different size, 34 cm long by 12.5 cm wide. The line of the prefatory drawing is rather thick and the calligraphic style is much poorer than that of the other part 4.
