Description

This transcription of the Hwaeomgyeong (Avatamsaka Sutra) is presumed to be Vol. 15 among the 81 transcriptions (either the 80-volume edition plus one more volume on the chapter of Samantabhadra precepts or the 80-volume edition plus 3 volumes of Hwaeomgyeong). It was written in 1334 (the 3rd year of King Chungsuk’s restoration to the throne) and is executed in gold on indigo paper. The transcription is a copy of the second half of Chapter 12 (chapter on Hyeonsu Bodhisattva) of the Hwaeomgyeong and is a Buddhist text in verse praising the virtuous deeds and ascetic practices of Hyeonsubosal, including how light emanated from his body as he attained spiritual enlightenment and how he experienced the mysterious and supernatural power of Buddha through the perfect state of spiritual concentration, at the request of Manjusrr Bodhisattva. An elaborate Sutra Painting is painted on the cover together with a production record that clearly indicates the production date, entity, and purpose. It says that a high-ranking official named Jeong Dokmandara commissioned the copy of the 81 volumes of Hwaeomgyeong and 10 volumes of Suneungeomgyeong (Suramagma Sutra) to pray for the health and well-being of his parents, the Emperor of the Yuan Dynasty of China, and the King of the Goryeo Dynasty. This transcription of the Sutra appears to have been made at the same time as the one designated as Treasure No. 752. It carries immense historical value since it provides much insight into the art and Buddhist culture of the early 14th century and the exchanges between government officials of the Goryeo Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty of China at that time.
