Description

Hongmu jeongun yeokhun is a book printed and published on metal type in 1455 (the 3rd year of the reign of King Danjong of the Joseon Dynasty). This publishing project was embarked upon during the reign of the Great King Sejong. To correct the pronunciation of Chinese characters after creating the Hunminjeongeum (The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People), King Sejong completed Dongguk Jeongun (Standard Rhymes of the Eastern State) in 1447 (the 29th year of his reign). Thereafter, in order to more precisely note the pronunciation of Chinese characters, the project to represent Hongmu Jeongun, which was published in the Ming Dynasty of China (1368-1644) in Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, was completed with the publication of sixteen volumes and eight books in 1455 (the third year of the reign of King Danjong of the Joseon Dynasty). Volumes three to sixteen have survived, while volumes 1 and 2 are missing. In those volumes, Hangeul, Chinese characters, and large characters were printed with wooden block-type, while small characters were printed with copper type. In addition, volume 15 of Bohanjaejib, written by Sin Suk-ju, includes Hongmu jeongun, which leads to conjecture the purpose and list of the book. This book is especially useful for studies of Korean literature of the period.
