Description
Volume 2 of Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) consists of 49 pages, of which pages 17 to 20 have been restored, and a cover - also restored, though at a later date - engraved with a swastika design. The book is well preserved. Various writings in ink, including the words Hwangmajungyangwolmaedeuk Nisannamssigajang written on the middle of the back page of the front cover of the book, and Nisanjang, written on the middle of the back page of the back cover, prove that a man surnamed Nam bought and kept this book in the second month of the 55th year of the Chinese Sexagenary Cycle. Regarding its contents, as the use of kings’ names of the Goryeo Dynasty was less avoided (i.e. due to a naming taboo), the book was published during the early Joseon period. It also contains many differences compared to the Jeongdeok edition, which was published in Gyeongju in 1512 (the 7th year of the reign of King Jungjong), and serves as a reference for the correction of mistakes in the Jeongdeok edition. Along with Samguk sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms), Samguk yusa is an extremely important documentary record of ancient Korean history.
