Description
This jar vase is noted for its elegant underglaze decorations reminiscent of literati paintings in early Joseon style. The dark brown underglaze decorations are painted in iron oxide. The vase is ringed, around the mouth rim and the base, with triangular-shaped stylized lotus petals. The shoulder, meanwhile, is adorned with a band of yeouidu motifs in an atypical style. The front and back sides of the body of the vase feature each an image of a blossoming plum tree and one of a bamboo tree, two very popular themes since early Joseon. The brushstrokes are bold, fluid and assured, as though painted in ink on a sheet of paper. The gradation of iron oxide shades adds the feeling of speed and liveliness. The surface, coated with a thin layer of a clear light grayish glaze, is lustrous. This 17th-century iron oxide decorated vase is amongst the finest of its kind and a true gem of ceramic art.
