Description

This is a rectangular pillar-shaped Buncheong memorial tablet with a round hole at the center of the upper surface. The inscription indicates that it was produced in 1448 (the 13th year of Emperor Jeongtong of the Ming Dynasty, which corresponds to the 30th year of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty). There are also six other Buncheong wares with stamped designs, i.e. one oval bowl, one large tray, two small jars and two plates, all of which are presumed to have been found together with the memorial tablet. Although the production of ceramic memorial tablets began in the Joseon Dynasty, works from the early Joseon period are very rare, and this is one of the earliest examples. The personal history of the memorial tablet’s owner, Yeongin (the title conferred upon the wives of third-ranking officials) Yi, is inscribed on the four sides of the memorial tablet, including the year of her death, her family lineage, social status, and the personal history of her husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, maternal grandfather, her son and two daughters. The inscription itself is of considerable historical significance as it provides insight into various aspects of early Joseon society. In addition, the memorial tablet is a valuable source for ceramics research as the production date (1448) is clearly indicated, while the six Buncheong wares with stamped designs believed to have been discovered together with the memorial tablet are also valuable to the study of Buncheong wares of the early Joseon Dynasty.
