Description

This is a list of scholars who passed the lower level civil service examinations in 1501 (the 7th year of the reign of King Yeonsangun of the Joseon Dynasty). There were two types of lower civil service examinations: the classics licentiate examinations and the literary licentiate examinations. The literary licentiate examinations were held at two separate examination halls, each with six supervising officers. The supervising officers at the first examination hall included Yu Sun, the state councilor, Kim Sim, the vice minister of Taxation, and Nam Gon, an official at the Ministry of Personnel; while Seong Hyeon, the inspector-general, supervised at the second examination hall. Yi Su-jeong took first place in the classics licentiate examinations, while Kim An-guk took first place in the literary licentiate examinations. Among the names included on the roster, those of Nam Gon, a supervising officer, and Kim An-ro, one of the five highest scoring candidates in the literary licentiate examinations, have been painted over with ink as they became transgressors after this list was published. This roster was printed with the gabin-ja type (movable metal type cast in 1434), and was published and distributed by the Ministry of Rites. It was handed down to the descendants of Munuigong (posthumous title) Kim Sik (1482-1520), who was one of the candidates that passed the literary licentiate examination. This book is both historically significant and valuable for study of the state examination system and officials of the early Joseon Dynasty.
