Description

This Portrait of Kim Yu (1653-1719), a civil official of the later mid-Joseon Dynasty, exhibits the prevalent portraiture style of the early 18th century. The subject is painted in three-quarters view from the left wearing a courtier's round-necked robe, seated on a chair. The title at the top right reads, "Portrait of Master Kim at 64 Years of Age", revealing it was painted in 1716 (the 42nd year of the reign of King Sukjong). Typical of an early 18th-century literati portrait, the chair is flatly depicted with deeply bent arms, and is covered with a tiger skin. Characteristically, the tiger skin has stripes rather than dots. A tiny part of the tiger's head is shown between the subject's feet, which are spread wide apart on the footrest. This well-preserved painting is one of just a few full-length literati portraits dating from the 1710s featuring a scholar-official dressed in a courtier's official robe and seated on a chair. Painted with a prominent technique, the portrait is a successful example of a popular Joseon portraiture style that would be widely adopted after the 18th century. ㅇ Dimensions (L x W): 172 x 90 cm (painting), 242.5 x 107 cm (total)
