Description
This is a portrait of a civil minister, Jeong Tak (pen-name Yakpo), 89 cm wide and 167 cm long. Jeong Tak (1526-1605) was the pupil of a famous Confucian scholar, Yi Hwang, of the Joseon Dynasty. He passed the civil service examination in 1558, the 13th year of the reign of King Myeongjong, and participated in editing Myeongjong sillok (The Annals of King Myeongjong). The full-length portrait was painted in 1064, the 37th year of the reign of King Seonjo. The subject is sitting on a chair and looking to the right. He is wearing his official hat, purple silk official uniform with the hyungbae (embroidered insignia on the breast and the back) depicting a pair of cranes. His white beard is vivid, and his facial contour is defined in a pale red thin line. The cloud patterns on the uniform are in a dark, soothing color and the folds in the clothes are expressed idealistically rather than realistically, as is often found in other portraits of the era. With its colored floor, this is a typically stable-looking portrait of a meritorious retainer.
