Description
The title at top right states this is a Portrait of King Cheoljong (1831-1863), painted in 1861, the 12th year of his reign. It is the only royal portrait of the Joseon Dynasty featuring the king dressed in a traditional military uniform. The precise depiction of the delicate patterns on the fabric and refined ink and wash technique indicate the portrait was painted by prominent artists. According to Eojin dosa sasil (Records of the Production of Royal Portraits), compiled by Gyujanggak, the Joseon Royal Library, Yi Han-cheol and Jo Jung-muk served as chief portraitists, with assistance from Kim Ha-jong, Bak Gi-jun, Yi Hyeong-rok, Baek Yeong-bae, Baek Eun-bae and Yu Suk. Over a month they painted two versions, one featuring the king in a silk gauze robe and one in a military uniform. Only the latter is handed down today.
