Description
These documents belong to Jeong Tak (pen name Yakpo, 1526-1605), who was a civil magistrate during the mid-Joseon Dynasty. They are kept at Yumulgak Shrine, which was built to cherish the memory of Jeong Tak and to store and manage his posthumous works and documents. Jeong Tak was a member of the literati circle of Yi Hwang, a prominent Neo-Confucianist scholar. He served as the head of Saheonbu (the administration of inspections during the Joseon Dynasty) after passeingthe civil service examination in 1558. In 1592, when the Japanese invaded Korea, he was ordered to escort King Seonjo to Uiju. Jeong Tak showed eminent talents in astronomy and geography, as well as in military matters. He also recommended to the king excellent generals such as Gwak Jae-u and Kim Deok-ryeong during the period of the Japanese invasion. In March 1597 when Admiral Yi Sun-sin was in prison and sentenced to death, he worked hard to stop the execution and saved Admiral Yi. He is the author of Yakpojib and Yongmanmungyeonnok. The relics of Jeong Tak displayed at Yumulgak Shrine consist of various manuscripts and documents: Jeonggangonggyoji, one set of Wuiseonggongsingyoseo, two volumes of Yongsailgi Diary, Yongsajamnok, Yongmanmungyeonnok, Imjingirok, Seonjosijipyumuk, two volumes of Yakposeonjoyumuk, two volumes of Yakposeonjogancheop, Seonjochogoyumuk, and Giroyeonsihwacheop. These relics and documents are regarded as outstanding examples of official documents issued during the Joseon Dynasty, and excellent materials for the study of social life in the period around the time of the Japanese invasion.
