Description
Yu Eon-ho (1730-1796) was a prominent civil official during the reign of King Jeongjo. In this portrait believed to commemorate his promotion to third state councilor he is depicted wearing a ceremonial robe and a black silk hat but, rather uniquely, standing with his right hand partially exposed. The colophon at the left edge says the portrait was painted in 1787 by Yi Myeong-gi, the top palace portraitist at the time. King Jeongjo commented on his friendship with Yu on the top. As in other portraits produced by Yi, the skin texture of the subject’s face and the robe are skillfully expressed with color wash. The dense ink beneath the sleeves and the shadow on the rush mat are impressive. The painter wrote near the right edge that he reduced to half the face and the body as they were large, thereby implying he calculated the proportion of the subject's actual height and that in the picture.
