Description

This stone pagoda consisting of a single-layer platform and a five-story main body is located in the middle of a field to the south to Malmi Market in Gyesan-ri, Cheongwon. The platform is unadorned. As for the main body, the core stones of the first and third stories are each composed of four stones, while the second, fourth, and fifth stories are each composed of a single stone. The roof stones of the first and second stories are each hewn from two stones, and those of the remaining stories from a single stone. As for the cornices of the roof stones, the first and second stories have a five-tiered cornice, the third and fourth have the four-tiered one, and the fifth story has a three-tiered one. Each roof stone has a steep slope on its outer surface. Although the cornice of each stone extends to the ends of the eaves and looks heavy, the pagoda generally looks well-balanced, with a sense of stability. This five-story stone pagoda has a well-proportioned structure with roof stones that give it a sense of stability. Judging from its single-story platform and its workmanship, it is believed to have been be built during the mid Goryeo period.
