Description

This Scroll of Oath-taking Rites was conducted by King Injo in the ninth lunar month of 1646, the 24th year of his reign, along with 20 meritorious subjects and their children, following an awards presentation for those who had helped to subdue treason. The scroll contains the text of the oath and the names of participants as well as other related records. The oath was taken by the king, the crown prince, and the meritorious subjects and their children, vowing to heaven and earth to do their utmost to repay the grace of the country, swearing loyalty to the king and unity and cooperation among themselves. The list of participants includes the names and titles of the meritorious subjects and their eldest sons and grandsons, as well as the names of those who were absent from the rites and their reasons for absence, such as disease, mourning or tour of duty abroad. The scroll ends with the date, "The third day of the ninth lunar month in the third year of Shunzhi (Qing emperor)".It is assumed the scroll was made in an impressive size with the best materials available for preservation in the royal household or the Office of Merit Subjects. With each letter brushed with great care, it shows the high standard of documentary culture during the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty. It is evaluated even more highly as few documents of this kind are handed down in such perfect condition.
