Description
Saddharmapundarika Samadhi (Meditation on the Lotus Sutra) is a manual for liturgical practice of faith, written by the missionary monk Shangen of the Tiantai School. It teaches how to attain the truth of the middle path in this polluted world, as lotus flowers bloom in muddy water, by reading the Lotus Sutra and meditating with one mind. This book consists of three volumes, of which this is the first volume. It contains the first seven out of the total twenty-eight chapters of the Lotus Sutra, that is, from Introduction to Analogy of the Transformed. As this scroll does not carry a publication note, it is not known exactly when the book was printed. It can be assumed, however, that it was printed during the last years of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) in view of the folding style of the scroll. Each page has 30 items and 19 letters, and the Chinese character ‘卜’ for pagination. This is an important material for studying the method of meditation and repentance based on the Lotus Sutra during the Goryeo Dynasty.
