Description

This is the first of the 10 volumes of the Shurangama Sutra (The Sutra of the Heroic One). This Korean edition was printed in 1461, the seventh year of King Sejo, with the big, middle and small Chinese letters in eulhae type as well as Hangeul (Korean script) type. The big letters were cast based on neat regular script written by King Sejo and the middle and small letters on the calligraphy of Kang Hui-an, a scholar-official well versed in calligraphy and painting. The Hangeul type was cast to print this sutra earlier that year. The Korean edition was compiled under royal orders in the fifth lunar month of 1461, at the request of Prince Hyonyeong, the king's uncle. King Sejo assigned translating and proofreading to the Buddhist Monk Sinmi, Han Gye-hui, and Kim Su-on. The first edition printed that year was proofread and corrected so the Directorate of Buddhist Publications would print a woodblock edition in 1462. The first print, called the Eulhae Type Edition, served as a standard version in printing later Korean editions of the sutra. In view of the corrections marked in red, this is a test copy printed out for proofreading and hence is even more important for studies of printing history and bibliography. Also, the side dots on the Korean text are useful for research in archaic Korean language.
