Description
This Chinese-style building used to be the house of General Yi Sun-mong who contributed to the conquest of Daemado Island and the Jurchens during the reign of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty. Built in 1433 (the 15th year of the reign of King Sejong), it was restored after being designated as Korea’s official cultural heritage in 1970. It currently serves as a shrine where traditional rites are held before the general’s ancestral tablet. It has five kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) at the front and three kan at the sides. Its hip and gable roof looks like an equilateral triangle when viewed from its side, and it also has additional wing-like parts on both ends. Therefore, the roof’s overall shape is actually a scalene triangle. This implies a transition from the equilateral triangle-shaped roof to the scalene triangle-shaped one. The house also has a beak-like part that decorates the top of the pillar to sustain the eaves. According to the floor plan of the building, each of the kan at the sides is one ja shorter than each of the three kan in the middle. The ceiling inside reveals the rafters. Overall, the house has a structure that was widely used during the early Joseon Dynasty but also includes some sophisticated, beautiful decorations that appeared during the late Joseon period. Research confirmed that the house had been repaired several times. This is a simple, sturdy house.
