Description
This gorgeous hanging painting, credited to Saekmin and other monk painters, features five important Buddhas and Bodhisattvas – Sakyamuni in the center, flanked by Manjusri holding a wish-granting jewel at left and Samantabhadra holding a lotus flower at right, and Avalokitesvara and Amitabha on either side of the aureole at the back. Sharing a common theme with the hanging paintings housed at Naesosa, Anjeongsa, Cheonggoksa, Unheungsa, and Dabosa Temples, this five-Buddha composition is based on Ojong beomeumjip (Collection of Ritual Chants in Five Kinds), a ritual manual which was widely used at temples across Jeolla-do in the 18th century. A well-proportioned composition overall with plump figures and colorful and diverse decorative patterns, the painting clearly suggests that Saekmin, the head painter, faithfully inherited the painting style of his teacher, Uigyeom. It is one of Saekmin’s representative works attesting to his lineage to famous monk painters of previous generations.
