Description

These are seven extant volumes remaining from two Chinese Editions of the Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra) in a total of 140 volumes – 60 volumes of the Jin Version translated by Buddhabhadra (Fobatuoluo, or Bulbaltara in Korean) of Eastern Jin and 80 volumes of the Zhou Version translated by Siksananda (Shichanantuo, or Silchananta in Korean) of the Tang Dynasty – hand-copied in 1336, the fifth year of the second reign of King Chungsuk during the Goryeo Dynasty. Written in silver on indigo paper, they are the 28th, 29th and 38th volumes of the Jin Version, and the 24th, 53rd, 56th and 60th volumes of the Zhou Version. According to a postscript at the end of the 60th volume of the Zhou Version, not only these two but a third Zhenyuan Version was also hand-copied at the time, in accordance with the wishes of Seonji, chief abbot at Girimsa Temple in Gyeongju, assistant royal secretary Im Seo, and Jijik Unsan. Hence the total number of volumes hand-copied at this time amounted to 180. All the seven extant volumes are in good condition. They are regarded as valuable material for the study of sutra copying.
