Description
This bell, originally intended as a midsize ritual bell for Daewonsa Temple in Boseong-gun, was cast in 1657 by Kim Yong-am, the foremost bell maker of the Joseon Dynasty. With a stable, well-proportioned body, the bell has a hook in the shape of vigorous twin dragons holding up a wish-granting jewel. The top plate has a band of inverted lotus petals carved with the Chinese character ‘梵,’ meaning Brahman, and the body has a band of medallions containing the same character around the shoulder and a band of lotus petals around the rim. In between are elaborately carved lotus panels, Indra and Brahma, and a tablet symbolizing wishes for the prosperity of the royal family. Along with the Bronze Bell of Yongheungsa Temple in Damyang, this bell represents the excellent bell-casting craftsmanship of Kim Yong-am.
