Description

The royal family of the Joseon Dynasty first printed the Ksitigarbha pranidhana Sutra (Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva) in 1474, the fifth year of King Seongjong’s reign, to pray for the repose of Queen Gonghye, the first wife of King Seongjong, after she died prematurely at 19. The project was jointly invoked by three queen dowagers, Jeonghui (wife of King Sejo), Insu (wife of the posthumous king Deokjong and mother of King Seongjong) and Ansun (second wife of King Yejong), as well as King Seongjong, and was funded by the Royal Treasury. The sutra was printed at Gyeonseongsa Temple, the tutelary temple of Lady Sin, wife of Prince Gwangpyeong. The present edition is a reprint made in 1485 by supplementing three missing woodblocks. A publishing note at the end of the sutra states that this supplemented edition was printed in the fourth month of the 21st regnal year of Chenghua (Ming emperor), with funds raised by Buddhist Monk Sinhwan. A royal edition printed from woodblocks produced by famous carvers and financed by the palace, the sutra is valuable reference material for study of publishing and printing in early Joseon as well as Buddhist faith in the Joseon royal household.
