Description
This item finely showcases the style of Heo Mok (pen-name: Misu, 1595-1682), a prominent Confucian scholar of 17th-century Joseon and a calligrapher renowned for his seal script, in large-character seal script. This calligraphy, lined using support pins, is in excellent condition as well. The three characters making up ‘Hamchwidang,’ a house name, are written on three separate sheets of paper, which were then joined together. The middle sheet, bearing the character ‘chwi,’ is a bit narrower in width than the two others. A text written by the owner of the house, Hong Su-bo (1723-1799), in April 1791 (the 15th year of King Jeongjo’s reign), accompanying the calligraphy, recounts how it was passed down from generation to generation. Very few surviving calligraphic works have such notes providing complete information as to their history as does this one. This item is also noteworthy for the four seal marks of Heo Mok that were previously never encountered.
