Description
This work by Heo Mok (pen-name: Misu, 1595-1682), dating from 1682 (the 8th year of King Sukjong’s reign), is written in gold, on eight panels of black silk. The content is from his own Hanganmun, Buryeomusaki and Huinojigye. The original text and the calligraphy appear to have been prompted by the incident in January of the same year in which Yi Jeong-yeong (1616-1686), a court official belonging to the Seoin group, petitioned the king to ban the use of the seal script. Hanganmun is a seminal text for Heo Mok’s seal script style and is also noted for its close links to Han Jian by Guo Zhongshu, a scholar and painter of the Northern Song who was also a paleographer. This unique gold-written example of Heo Mok’s handwriting is in quite decent condition.
