Description

This was found in a box storing relics laid beside the head of a coffin in Cheonmachong (Heavenly Horse Tumulus) Tomb. It is in the shape of a flying bird with its wings spread out with a shield-like ornament attached underneath. A pattern of vines is carved on the body of the ornament and on both wings. Around the edge and trunk runs along a delicate dotted line which helps hold up the thin gold plate. On the front surface there are about 400 circular plates, each with a diameter of 0.7cm, hanging on gold threads. This gives it an appearance of splendor. On the lower half there is no decoration at all. There is a round protrusion and one nail hole. It is still not certain how this ornament was used or what it was attached to.
