Description
This cursive script calligraphy of the poems of several people, including Cheongcheon (菁川:柳希齡, 1480-1552), Yeongcheon (靈川:申潛, 1491-1554), Gyulong (橘翁:尹衢, 1495~?), Songgang (松江:趙澄, 1511~1574?), and Seoha (西河:?), was written by Hwang Gi-ro (pen-name: Gosan, 1525~1575?), a master calligrapher of 16th-century Korea. According to the inscriptions, Hwang’s motive for producing the calligraphy was that he couldn’t help writing those poems and the calligrapher of the work. This calligraphic work was originally made as a long scroll, although it has been framed by the current owner. The calligraphy, which is preserved in good condition without any damages, bears the five caldron-pattern of the seal of Baek Bong (which is supposedly a pen-name of Kim Subin, 1626~?) and the printed phrase ‘a descendant of a loyal subject’ (a reference to Kim Seon-pyeong, one of the three meritorious retainers recognized for their role in the foundation of the Goryeo Dynasty).
