Description
Hwangnam Great Tumulus is a tumulus of Silla located in Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The Gyeongju Tumuli serial number is Hwangnam-dong tumulus no 98. It was excavated and researched by the Office of Cultural Assets in 1973 and 1975. Today the outward form of the tumulus is restored. Two mounds connected north and south give it the shape of a small gourd. It is the largest mound from the Silla Period. Its breadth is 80m east-west, 120m north-south. The height of the south tumulus is 23m and that of the north tumulus is 22m. It is the largest mound from the Silla period. This Silver Cup was excavated from the north mound of Hwangnam Great Tumulus. From its shape, it seems to be a relic of the Silla period. It is 3.5 cm in height, and the diameter of its rim is 7cm. It has a flat bottom and the pattern used to decorate the outer surface is quite unique. There is a narrow band around the rim and under the band, lotus flowers are closely knitted to form a decorative pattern. Below the lotus flowers, there is a crisscross pattern of tortoise shell. Inside the tortoise shell, there are printed figures of imaginary animals. In the center of the bottom of the cup, there is also a printed flower holding a phoenix. This mode of expression with its figures of imaginary animals can only be seen on the shoes for decoration unearthed from Singnichong Tomb (Singni Tumulus), Gyeongju. The pattern itself has connections with the copper mirror of Han Dynasty China, but nothing definite is known about this.
