Description
This piece of calligraphy by King Jeonjo is a poem written in lines of seven characters in September 1798 for Munsangjeongsa Pavillion, which was built by Jeong Min-si (pen-name: Jeongwa, 1745~1800). It is written in the semi-cursive style of writing on light pink paper decorated with a gilt cloud and dragon design. The royal seals of King Jeongjo; Gyujangjibo (the King’s most valuable asset), Hongjae (pen-name of King Jeongjo), and Mangijiga (meaning that although the king was busy dealing many works, he had found time to read books) are printed at the beginning and end parts of the calligraphy respectively. Decorated with the typical cover decoration of royal records of the late Joseon Dynasty (in light blue and ivory silk), this is the largest extant calligraphic work by King Jeongjo and has been preserved in good condition. In addition, it exhibits a different writing style, with thicker touches, pointing to the influence of the writing style of Yan Zhen-qing (a famous calligrapher of the Tang Dynasty of China), compared to his earlier works. The Calligraphy by King Jeongjo - Jemunsangjeongsa, written two years before his death, is regarded as a masterpiece among his calligraphic works. It is a representative work of the calligraphic culture - in terms of its contents, writing style, and decoration – of the royal court of the Joseon Dynasty.
