Description
This cylindrical bowl with a lid is called a hap. The bowl is 9.6 cm tall with the mouth 7.5 cm in diameter and the bottom 6.0 cm in diameter. Many similar bowls of celadon porcelain have been found. They are divided into two types according to their shape, short flat ones and tall cylindrical ones. This is a tall bowl similar to a metallic hap found in a hole for the storage of Buddha relics at the nine-story wooden pagoda of Hwangnyongsa Temple. Overall, this piece has a simple shape. The edges of the bottom and the upper part of the lid are diagonally cut to give a soft and sturdy look. Several cranes and clouds are delicately engraved on the top surface of the lid. What attracts most attention is the name of a government agency, Sangyakguk, written in Chinese and processed with white damascene work on the upper part of the bowl and underneath the lid. A bowl of this type is very rare. Since Sangyakguk was the agency in charge of medicine during the Goryeo Dynasty, it can be presumed that this hap was used to contain medicine. This agency existed from the reign of King Mokjong (beginning of the 11th century) until that of King Chungseon (end of the 13th century). This hap seems to have been produced some time in the 12th century. Several fragments of celadon porcelain with the same lettering were found near the kilns in Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do. Similar bowls are also exhibited in the National Museum of Korea and the Daiwa Cultural Center in Japan.
