Description
The Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Gaeunsa Temple in Seoul is a sculpture noted for a well-defined, solemn face, the majestic yet balanced proportions, lively and dynamic shapes and lines and the overall sophistication of the sculptural technique. This highly accomplished piece of sculptural work is, therefore, considered one of the masterpieces of late Goryeo Buddhist sculpture. This Buddha statue, according to its repair record, was refurbished in 1274, even earlier than the Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Gaesimsa Temple, another statue from the early part of the late Goryeo Period, whose repair is recorded to have taken place in 1280. This statue, thus, appears to have been created no later than the early 13th century, which makes it one of the very rare Buddhist sculptures dating from the early 13th century having survived to the present. The statue is over 1m in height and was originally housed in Chukbongsa Temple in Asan. This masterful work of sculptural art is in a great state of preservation as well.
