Description
This document certified the king’s bestowal of the title of ‘meritorious subject’ on a courtier; in other words, a government official recognized as having made major contributions to the state. This document was issued by King Taejong to courtiers who had been his loyal followers while he was still the crown prince to reward their devotion. This particular certificate was issued in 1411 (the 11th year of King Taejong’s reign) to Yi Hyeong, granting him the status of class-3 meritorious subject. The document in mulberry paper measures 243cm by 34.7cm. An example of certificate from their second issue during King Taejong’s reign, following the first issue by King Taejo, Joseon’s founding king, the document sheds light on the style of official letters of this type.
