Description
This copy of Cheonjamun (Thousand Character Classic) is the only surviving copy of the first print edition of the same text, printed with woodblocks carved based on the manuscript by Han Ho (1543-1605, pen-name: Seokbong). This book, therefore, holds tremendous significance for the study of Han Ho’s calligraphy style. After the release of its first edition in 1583 (the 16th year of King Seonjo’s reign), this book was re-printed several times by the royal house, government agencies, Buddhist temples as well as private persons and was the most widely-circulated version of the Thousand Character Classic in Joseon, setting the standard for the beginner-level learning of Chinese characters and calligraphy. This book is of highest significance for the study of ancient Korean, bibliographic research and research into the history of calligraphy. It could, furthermore, prove a useful source material for research into the history of education in mid-Joseon and in ensuing eras and the history of the Korean language and publishing.
