Description
Yi Ji-jeong (1588-1650) was a literati calligrapher of the early 17th century. His courtesy name was Jeongo, and his pen-name Cheongseon. The son of Yi Sang-ui (1560-1624), Yi Ji-jeong successfully passed the civil service examination in 1616 and occupied several government positions including the position as a town magistrate. This calligraphy album titled Chwiyeong gujeol (Nine Quatrain Poems by a Drunken Poet) is very illustrative of the style of this calligrapher renowned for his cursive style. From the phrase at the end of the album, one learns that nine quatrain poems in it were composed by Yi Min-gu (1589-1670, pen-name: Dongju), while drunk, for the owner of Hwaneojeong Pavilion. The album, however, contains currently only seven quatrain verses with four five-word quatrain poems added at the end. Although a minor work of Yi Ji-Jeong, the writings in this album amply showcase the calligrapher’s signature brushstrokes, which are free and unconstrained, rough and forceful. This calligraphy album thus fully deserves its place among state-protected cultural heritage objects.
